Classic D&D refers collectively to all Original and Basic versions of D&D, as distinct from Advanced D&D and its successors (2nd, 3rd, and 4th edition D&D).

Classic D&D properly covers Original D&D (1974) also known as the White Box, as well as the original supplements; Holmes Basic (1978); Moldvay Basic/Expert (1981); Mentzer/BECMI (1983); the Rules Cyclopedia or Challenger D&D (1991); the Black Box; and the Gold Box.

The Classic D&D tag also covers retro clones of any classic version of the game. These include Basic Fantasy RPG, Labyrinth Lord, and Swords & Wizardry, as well as any others that may be created.

This tag was created as a way to say you are interested in any version of Classic D&D, excluding AD&D or 3E/4E. (To indicate exclusive interest in a specific flavor of classic, use the appropriate tag.)
