The Ubiquity system is a fine mechanic from exile game studio for their Hollow ?Earth Expedition, licensed to some other companies for conversions or origional setting, such as Desolation.

The basic mechanic is rolling pools of dice, even being successes and odds being failures, roll so many successes to do something, hit something or whatnot. An interesting mechanic is that if you have a score high enough that you would have an average of enough successes, then you automatically win, sort of like d&d's taking ten but usable for any situation at any time.

In a fight, each side rolls it pool, and however many successes the attacker rolls more than the defender, that's the damage. Real simple, real fast. Might lead to a lot of clattering at the table, with good high rolls and whatnot.
