"Indie" technically means that the intellectual property of the game is wholly controlled by its creators. Like "indie music", though, its meaning is a bit amorphous in use, implying new thinking in design, with mechanics that focus on different areas than "traditional" RPGs.

For example, by the publishing definition, Unknown Armies is not "indie," nor is Over the Edge, but people call them "indie" anyway. Games that are both creator-controlled and unusual (at the time of their creation) include Clinton R. Nixon's The Shadow of Yesterday, Vincent Baker's Dogs in the Vineyard, and Chad Underkoffler's Zorcerer of Zo; there are many others.
