This is a magic system for use with the GURPS tabletop roleplaying game. It can be used as a replacement for the default magic system in the GURPS Basic Set, which has been criticized by some fans. It is rooted in the "powers" rules, making it more flexible, more consistent with the overall ruleset, and simpler in play.
During character creation the player selects (or perhaps designs) a list of spells the character can cast, and the character also has automatic access to a list of less powerful "cantrips" selected by the GM as part of the campaign background. Optionally, the GM can also allow new cantrips to be improvised in play, though this adds considerable complexity. The Sorcery system can be contrasted with the Ritual Path Magic system, in which spellcasters freely invent spells on the fly, at the expense of more complexity in play.
