D&D is the longest running, most popular major tabletop roleplaying system out there. It has been through several different incarnations since its inception in the early 70's. The second edition rules remained in print for roughly 20 years before WotC bought the game and gave it a major rewrite/facelift and a 3rd edition release in 2000.

The current version of the rules was released in 2003 as "Dungeons and Dragons v3.5". This revision is largely compatible with 3.0 rules and mostly focuses on a few issues of class balance and of edge rule cases. Most 3.0 supplemental materials can be dropped into a 3.5 game with minimal discomfort.
