Note: This tag is for the versions of Dungeons & Dragons published alongside AD&D in 1977, 1981, 1983, and 1991. If your interest is in the 2014 D&D Basic Rules, the free downloadable version of 5th Edition, then use the D&D 5th Edition tag instead. If your interest is in the 2004 D&D Basic Game, the introductory boxed set for 3rd Edition, then use the D&D 3rd Edition tag instead.

Basic D&D refers collectively to all Basic versions of D&D, as distinct from both Original D&D, as well as Advanced D&D and its successors (2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th edition D&D).

Basic D&D properly covers Holmes Basic (1978); Moldvay Basic/Expert (1981); Mentzer/BECMI (1983); the Rules Cyclopedia or Challenger D&D (1991); the Black Box; and the Gold Box.

The Basic D&D tag also covers retro clones of any basic version of the game. These include Basic Fantasy RPG and Labyrinth Lord.

This tag was created as a way to say you are interested in any version of Basic D&D, excluding Original D&D, AD&D, 3E, 4E, or 5E. (To indicate exclusive interest in a specific flavor of classic, use the appropriate tag.)
