What happened to the Google Maps?

Is there a snafu with Google, or is the site not using the maps anymore?

If you can see this, you're blocking JavaScript. Or I broke the maps.

There is a cap on google maps as to how much data you can transfer. Google maps is working on both the sites I've set up so a cap is the most likely reason.

Is there an ETA on when it will be fixed?

If the problem is the cap, it'll be "fixed" July 1st I'd guess, assuming the cap resets on the 1st.

I'm looking into it.

OK, as you can see, they're back.

I was improving the Javascript (ironically, so the maps would load a little faster) yesterday and introduced a bug that kept the maps from being displayed. It was a pretty easy fix, and I know how to watch for it in the future. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

CarlS: The limit you're thinking of is on the free Google Maps API, that around 50k maps per day they'll stop showing maps. You can pay for more or (I think) sometimes they'll let you wander a little over. I'm hoping to grow enough to run into that cap. :)

Ok. I didn't recall what the cap was and 50k per day seems quite high. I knew it was 50 something though :)

I know what you mean on fixing stuff. I've borked a few things here and there when "fixing" things :) Good luck.

Now is an excellent time to grow Harkins. 4e is out and lots of gamers are looking for games. I think you should start advertisng now, and find a way to push the 4e tag i made to the front page so everyone knows it exists.

I agree. I've been trying to run ads on EnWorld, a big D&D site. I'm also trying to finish a major feature to improve the site, though I'm wrestling with some Ruby weirdnesses. When I finish that I'm going to do even more widespread advertising.

Just got the EnWorld ads up -- apparently I'm the only advertiser at the moment, as I reloaded a couple times and only saw mine. I'm hoping to get some solid traffic out of it, we'll see how it goes.

I'm not seeing the NearbyGamers one appear at all

Already through the ad buy. There's no throttling or scheduling there at all, so all 500k impressions were gone in about a day and a half. The control panel there says I got 293 clicks, though my analytics say I got 162 visits out of it. NearbyGamers picked up about 40 gamers more than normal. Even with the hassle that's a fair return on $20, though I'd feel differently if I'd paid the going rate (4x) for it. I notice they backfill with Google Ads, I may try that as a cheaper alternative to their direct advertising when I start the full campaign.

That many impressions should last longer then that. The system might be broken. I'd suggest asking morrus about it.

He's not really an easy guy to get hold of, and I'm a bit worn out on chasing after him (one of the other reasons AdWords looks better). I've sent him an email yesterday about something else and I'll raise the issue if he replies, but otherwise it's just not worth the hassle.
