Hey all, Thanks for the Munchkin tips, I'm gonna go pick up one of the original game boosters (probably Need for Steed) in a few weeks once I get more friends playing.

In my spare time I've just started working with Harkins developing a Facebook application that will integrate some of the NG content into Facebook, in an attempt to tap the almost 50 million users there. This will initially allow for regular people to simply use the existing tags and toss them into their profile, or allow for you all (NG users) to tie it to your NG account, and have gaming interests duplicated on your profile! We hope that if this spreads to 5-10k people membership here will start to skyrocket. Social networks might be the viral growth needed since this community seems to have slowed.

So, my question to you is how many use Facebook, and is this something you'd add on to your profile? If out of 2000 people here no one wants it, well this might not be the best idea. But if 1500 of you step up and say you'll add it, and tell a friend (as you can use it without needing a membership here!) we could give this whole thing the kick in the pants it needs, and I'll aim for getting it out the door ASAP.

More than that, any feedback you can give (Would you like to see a way to view discussions eventually? Some way to find people near you on NG with Facebook.... etc) would be greatly appreciated by both Harkins and I so that we can turn out something to enhance this community!

Thanks for your time, Snarky

Sounds good to me, mate. Much better than the lame-arsed "send a free kick in the nads!" or "show your DVD rack" crap they have so far.

Go for it!

In the meantime start a Nearby Gamers group.

I'd add it. One of the very few FB apps I *would* add, actually.

Run some, play more (indie RPGs)

You mean Facebook would then actually be useful for something? Rock!

I would totally use such an app. Mind, I'd want very clear instructions, suggestions on how to use it, etc.

Well, it appears people will use it after all. Last week I think I nailed down about what the user interface will look like on the profile page.

This is it on your profile.

This is it on someone else's profile.

Working on the canvas page (Actually finding others with this tag) now. But real quick I'll say that on your profile: The file/arrow goes to the NG page for the tag, the X removes it from your profile, and clicking on the name finds others on facebook who play.

On other people's profile the file/arrow and tag name do the same things, the only new part here is if you click contact it'll pop open a message to send to that person prefilled with some NG information.

Now, ain't that simple diurnal_lee? (And even if the answer is no, don't worry, we will ship it with a nice helpfile of some sort that will explain everything.

While we wait for an application I've gone ahead and greated a Nearby Gamers group....

Snarky, Harkins if/when you join I'll make you admins.

Ok, code's in Harkins' hands as of tonight. He'll be vetting it and evaluating and once we make sure everything's kosher it'll go live!

Currently there's no 'Invite a friend' thingy on it, as those are limited to 10 requests a day... horrendously low.... by Facebook to prevent spamming so the way this'll get around is word of mouth (tell your friends/gaming buddies!) and a simple little share button (No limit on how many people you can 'share' it with as far as I know). Once it's live I'll post the app link on here, and we can use a nice big social network to find some more gamers around us!

Ironically, I have just posted a link to this site on one of the Ad&D groups on facebook - then saw this thread! lol

I would love to add this Application to my Facebook Profile!

It's up and looking OK, go to and it should prompt you to log into the app.

So..Whats it do? I mean, besides display our tags? It doesnt look like we can use it for anything producitve..

I've joined it, but I'm not entirely sure how it works yet; I'm not able to get it to recognise my tag.

Oh, never mind, I figured it out. I've got it added now.

Now I'm just spamming this fourm with comments.

But I've tied my nearbygamers account with my facebook account; when I click on the "my profile" link, it shows me all my games. However, when I'm in my actual facebook profile, it doesn't show me my games. Do I need to add the games again for facebook, or is it just taking a long time to change that page?

Hmm, puzzling. Just to make sure I understand you:

You added the NG app to your profile (and let it publish a box on your profile page). You then tied the account to your NG account (and hit apply, or whatever). On the profile page it shows all your games/discussion posts, yet on your profile it shows nothing?

Currently it *should* redo the FBML on your profile when you tie accounts, but in case it doesn't, click on the Nearby Gamers link on the left side (under applications). This will force it to update the FBML, which is the only reason I can think of that your profile would still be empty.

Hope this helps, if not feel free to message me or Harkins in more detail. Harkins holds the code, but I'm making changes to it so either of us should be able to help if this is a real bug.

OK, I've added the application, managed to get the first posting on the applications message board! and have the applications box appear on my profile with the following in:-

Iain's Games: No games listed.

So far so good! but I seem to be acting a little blonde today as I can't see anyway of tying it in with my profile here or doing anything with it (if I click on the application directly it just shows me my profile....)

Any advice would be helpful!

Here is a weird bug...when I click it sends me back to my own profile page, instead of the Nearby Gamers application page.

Also, how do I invite my friends to the application.

Ahh, that worked perfectly, thank you. Everything is OK now.

Heya, Sorry I haven't posted sooner, was giving thanks for warm beds and good food.

@Lunapilot: It appears that the 'account management' link went bye bye the last time we updated the code. Soon as I get back to my place tomorrow I'll take a peek at the code and try to get with Harkins to sort it out.

HOWEVER, once we're not having a blond moment, in the upper-right corner of the box on your profile there'll be a link to go to an account page, and from there you can put in your NG details and it'll all be done.

@BrooklynKnight: That's no bug, that's a feature! *Dramatic pose* To be a tad more serious, right now going to the app's page just pushes fresh FBML to your profile. Cheating way to make sure your games, etc are all up to date on the profile. This is because we're not sure what to do with the homepage yet. I'm currently wrapping up my last three weeks of school, so hopefully I'll be able to find time over Christmas break to address those.

As for inviting friends, I made a conscious design decision early on to add a share button instead of an invite button. Why? Because the invite is limited to 10 per day, whereas shares aren't limited (at least at the time of writing). At the bottom of the profile app you'll see the "share" button, and it fills in some defaults. Just choose where to put it, and you're done.

Hope this tides you guys over!

Ok. Here is some more suggestions. Right now it looks like it randomly lists 10 things from my list. I think the next step should be developing a more sophisticated GUI/User Page for the application so we can chose a "top 10 tags" to display on our profile to show the games we're most interested in. The stuff we want noticed at first glance.

As for the "share" button that only lists the link in the "Posted Items" application which doesn't always show up in someones newsbox. Yes, there is a 10person perday limit, but that's to prevent spam/flooding. Besides, not everyone is going to invite everyone on their friends list. So, I think a conventional invite button should be added back in.

Lastly, I've seen other applications that have map features. If you can figure out a way to further link someones account there to their account here so that it includes a map with their location (and just like here displays gamers near them) it will be a bit more exciting and more people may take it.

The 'randomness' is not quite as random as it appears. It's in order of date added, from newest to oldest. This was so that when you add a tag, if you have more than 10 you see it show up and it doesn't look like it was lost. Just had a (I think) good idea for this... maybe include a "Latest Added" link on the bottom, this would give an idea of where a player's current interests lie/are shifting to.

Harkins and I are liking your suggestions, and I especially like the idea of 'Top Picks'. This seems quite prevalent in our society, in phones, social networks, etc, so we might as well order our games that way as well! I agree a real user page is needed, hopefully I can work on it this weekend once we get svn up.

As far as the inviting button goes, it'll probably be at the bottom of the todo list. You can easily say "Hey [X, where X is a person you game with], go add the NearbyGamers app!" to make up for it in the mean time, but the other things you list (and a list of my own) are definitely things which will attract the more casual gamer who's not already on NearbyGamers.

Keep the good ideas coming! (That goes for all 3,000 of you...) --Snarky

I've done some behind-the-scenes stuff for the Facebook app yesterday and today that I'd like to mention. Now that it has a few users (thanks, testers!) I was able to submit the NearbyGamers app to the main application directory. It should be approved and appear shortly.

Less interesting but equally important, I set up subversion so that Snarky and other folks can easily help out with improvements. Curious developers can see the code at and motivated coders can drop me a line for commit access.

We did a bunch of work today to fix stuff that got deprecated over the last 5 months by Facebook. Hopefully things are working nicely for all of you, not just Luna,, if they look screwy try refreshing the FBML (click on the Nearby Gamers app on the left side) and get something up to date.

As always, message me and/or Harkins (he'd probably prefer it sent to me) with bug reports.

Hey, all. I just ran across this thread and wanted to say thanks for creating a Facebook app! I've been wishing for a while now someone would create a gaming/RPG oriented app for Facebook, so I'm really glad to see this one's in development. I immediately signed up and invited my gaming Facebook friends to do so as well.

One question: when I click on a tag in my Facebook profile, it takes me to a screen that says none of my friends have that tag, which is correct. But when I click on the link that says to find all Facebook users with that tag, there's still nothing, even for really popular tags like RPGs. Is this feature functional yet, or is it that most of the Facebook-using Nearby Gamers users haven't chosen those tags I've tried?

There are only 33 Facebook members in the Group. I'd wager less have gotten the application so far.

I would guess there's no one with the tag yet. To check, add on of the ones I've got. I've got it tied to my profile on here, so it should be easy to find them.

Snarky, I just tested Carcassone and Chez Geek, tags which we have in common, and neither turned up any matches. Hm.

Shoot, that sucks. I'm currently working on a project for DungeonRunners (personal, not for NCSoft) this weekend, but will look into it when I've got time. Most likely situation is Facebook changed their API again. That code was written 9 months ago!
