I just moved into a new area (Cedar Rapids, IA), and would love
to advertise NearbyGamers in the community -- get the local gamers
to come out of hiding, so to speak. Is there a poster available
that explains NearbyGaming's purpose that I could use?

Heh, I've been begging Harkins to make one for 9 months now!
Mayhaps if everyone posted here expressing the same desire, he'll
go find a graphic designer. Or, more likely, a graphic designer
walks amongst us who could help Harkins out?
What we really need is a catchy logo for NearbyGamers. If I had
that, I could do the page layout and writing for a poster fairly
easily. Any ideas?
Not sure if this is totally appropriate, but we just started a
similar site to help people find gamers in their area called
Spielerz.com. It's also
totally free, but we are actively marketing the site at conventions
and online. Also, we have flyers ;)
We just launched at Origins and have about 100 members as of
this post-- so not the numbers you have here, but if your
interested just wanted to put it out there.

Coandco: I know Harkins has had issues with flaky graphic
designers in the past. He had some ideas for a logo, so maybe if
you emailed him he'd tell you them. I can understand him not
wanting to air those ideas on an open forum before they're in
place, so I won't go into specifics.

I'm not going to yell at you for posting a link to your site,
no.
I'm working with a graphic designer on some custom markers for
the map and will likely use one of them as a logo. When I have a
logo, I'm going to start producing advertisements and will
definitely find some way to produce posters or flyers that you can
post around where you are.

The thing about Spielerz.com is that it's only for USA so far.
That's why I (being in the UK) think that NearbyGamers.com is the
one to use.
Plus it's a much more relevant url...

I for one find it a bit god damned rude.
Maybe its because I'm all about brand loyalty. When I joined
Meetup.com I was a loyal supporter for years. When I found this
place, i became a loyal supporter. Maybe your site should merge
with this one.
Brooklyn Knight--You may be right--to be honest I went back and
forth about posting anything for a while before I decided to go
ahead. Also, if Harkins feels it's over the line, I would totally
understand if he chooses to remove the post.
In the end, I decided to go ahead and post because I believe the
idea we both had about helping gamers find each other is a good
one, but for it to really work we will have to enlist the help of
the gamers themselves. The comment about trying to get a poster for
9-months made me wonder if Nearby Gamers was willing or able to do
that, thus, I decided to post. Conversations since that post make
it pretty clear that Harkins is planning to promote this site
pretty heavily in the next while, so again, if you feel the post
needs to go, I understand.

The 9 months comes from him telling me "Hey, I want to make a
site for gamers," and me saying "Hey, when you do give me a poster
for my local game store!" It's not that its just not happening,
it's that Harkins has better things to do (such as code the site)
than come up with posters, etc.
But, lets all keep hounding him!

I just spoke with ladyelizabethusa on the phone and we had a
real nice conversation. We're really doing almost the exact same
thing and working hard on growing, so we're going to be friendly
competitors. Merging would be a kind of giving up, and that's hard
for any entrepreneur. So we'll keep our eyes open to ways we can
work together, but for now we're just going to try to outperform
each other.
As for the poster, I'm calling and hassling the graphic designer
in about ten minutes.
Are we having Fun, yet?

Once you have a poster, or a link to a something I could print
out. I would be more then willing to put them up at local hobbie
stores and the like.

If you design a logo for this site, I would gladly put it on my
website........

I've run through two rounds of drafts with a graphic designer
and settled on a design for the logo. She's now working on a color,
vector image and I expect to see it in the next day or two.
Depending on how that looks we may do one more round of tweaking,
but I can say for sure we're very near.
